snippet: This dataset shows the general location of Biodiversity Areas and Corridors for the Columbia Plateau as defined by WDFW’s Priority Habitats and Species (PHS) program. These data are intended to identify a connected network of lands with exceptionally high habitat quality and value for multiple priority species (Biodiversity Areas) and areas expected to facilitate landscape connectivity and wildlife movement between Biodiversity Areas (Corridors) at a regional scale.

description:

Biodiversity Areas are characterized by large, contiguous, areas of habitat, beneficial to multiple focal species, with minimal disturbance from human activities (e.g., urban or housing development, agriculture, roads, etc.). Corridors are modeled pathways between Biodiversity Areas with minimal anthropogenic or ecological barriers to movement.

This dataset uses models developed as part of the Washington Connected Landscapes Project: Analysis of the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion by the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group, which modeled wildlife habitat quality and permeability for individual focal species representing a range of habitat needs. Fundamentally,

These areas are relevant to regional-scale planning activities and land use decisions such as informing open space planning, Urban Growth Boundary changes, zoning designations, comprehensive planning, or siting major developments. In their current format, these data are not well suited to site-specific land use proposals (e.g., where to site buildings on a parcel). Instead, these maps are intended to flag regions with high-quality, intact habitat and wildlife corridors so that decision-makers can account for those values when making major land use decisions affecting those regions.

licenseInfo:

The BAC data are intended to identify a regional network of lands with high biodiversity and connectivity value for wildlife that warrant special consideration during the land use decision-making process. The underlying data used to map BACs were produced at a level of detail insufficient to prioritize habitats or linkages at a fine scale. For this reason, the maps are not intended to be used to make land use planning decisions for individual sites or parcels, except in the of major projects covering relatively large tracts of land.

In addition, unlike other priority fish and wildlife areas (e.g., wetlands, riparian management areas, shrubsteppe), BACs do not have clearly defined boundaries that can be verified in the field. Instead, BACs can generally be distinguished from their surroundings due to their comparatively low level of disturbance. Not every location within the BAC map will necessarily have high value habitat and important habitat and connectivity areas may be found outside the BAC boundaries. The intended use of this map is to help direct land use policies aimed at protecting or enhancing ecological value towards supporting a connected network of intact habitat at the landscape scale.
